This Flipflopi dhow, made in Kenya from around 45 tonnes of waste plastic turned into planks, and covered in 30,000 discarded flip-flops, is sailing the Indian Ocean.

The crew is organising beach clean-ups, encouraging innovative recycling and discussing solutions to single-use plastic with law makers, business and communities.

The project’s aim is to build a larger ocean-bound ship, taking the message further.

Kenya already has one of the toughest penalties for plastic carrier bag use – up to $38,000 or four years in prison.
