Rwanda and Uganda make move to settle dispute

In a bid to ease diplomatic tension between Rwanda and Uganda, both presidents have agreed to release prisoners and commit to protecting human rights.

Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda have committed to refrain from actions that could be perceived as “supporting, financing and infiltration of destabilizing forces in their neighbour’s territory,” according to a statement that followed a meeting in Luanda, Angola on Sunday.

The summit followed the August 2019 Peace Pact that was signed by the two leaders and is the third convened by Angolan President Joao Lourenco in Luanda. It was attended by Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi, whose country has been the overseer of the implementation of the Luanda Memorandum of Understanding.

The leaders are scheduled to meet again on February 21 at the Katuna border, whereas an Ad Hoc team will meet to deliberate prior to the presidents’ arrival.
